It all sounds easy, but are in fact a very arduous tasks. Many superfluous files are hidden in subdirectories that take lots of disk space (mostly called leftover files, previous concepts, drafts, etc…). I became aware of it because I started to run out of disc space while my back up, that contains all the files I consider essential, barely contains 100 GB.
While I was it, I uncluttered my bank account and discovered lots of small useless subscriptions, but nevertheless together eating about 50 $ a month. There are better destinations for that money.
And then the internet profiles: I just checked the social media folder on my email account and just unsubscribed of some 100 accounts that just cluttered my inbox. Now I’m checking my other websites and it’s a work in progress. Why keep following accounts that rarely bring something informative or some human interest story that’s interesting me?
I also think it’s a very difficult task.
I’m always afraid of deleting files that I think I might need in the future, or that may contain important data I’ve forgotten about.

I forgot about most of the files that I’ve eliminated. I was just like you: doubting the wisdom of deleting them. And then I forgot all about them. Delete, delete, delete. Just imagine that your hard disc breaks down and consider what files are really essential to keep going on. If you use a laptop: don’t store your backup together with your laptop when you travel. If they steal your laptop you’ll at least still have your backup files (happened to me once at the airport, bad luck was that it was a brand new one: good luck was that I didn’t transfer all my files from the old one, so I still had a back up). Things get lost or broken. Last time it happened to me was when someone accidentally threw a cup of tea over the keyboard of my laptop. Luckily they could still recover the hard disk, but since then I’m backing up my files at least once a week (should do it more often: a week of work are many hours of work down the gutter).
