Past the original dwelling of Eve and Adam, the river extends from the curve of the shore to the bend of the bay, leads us through a conveniently traversable village of recurrence back to Howth Castle and its surrounding areas.

Sir Tristram, a player of love’s music, crossing the short sea, had recently returned from North America to wage his unprecedented war on the isolated isthmus of Europe Minor. Furthermore, the towering rocks near the Oconee stream, while constantly doubling their mischievous ways, had not yet proclaimed themselves to the astonished inhabitants of Laurens County.

Not a single voice had yet called out in excitement or alarm, nor had a playful child disrupted the serene presence of the wise old Isaac. Even though all seemed harmonious in appearance, the twins, Sosie and Esther, had yet to be provoked into anger by the misdeeds of Nath and Joe. Not even a measure of malt brewed by Jhem or Shen, illuminated by the gentle glow of a flickering flame, could be seen creating patterns on the reflective surface of the water.

Finnegans Wake
riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.

    1. It’s 2 % inspiration and 98 % transpiration. I took a heavily annotated version of Finnegans Wake and choose among the explanation of his idiosyncrasies the one that fitted best in the version of the story as I understood it, There exists a widely scholarly accepted interpretation of Finnegans wake, but I wanted to retell it from the perspective of Karma and Dharma. When my mind ground to a standstill, I took the particular text fragment and tried to visualize it. Hence the retelling is larded with plenty of surrealist illustrations. About its merger with the Kelmscott-Chaucer I can only say that it seemed a fitting mix.

      1. Ah! Super nice. I appreciate how you took the time to pour through annotations and critical material, all to inject some karma and dharma into the Wake. I think Joyce blushes from the grave every time his works inspires more work. That’s what it’s all about.

If I had some free time, I would do a word search for Dharma in the text. I’m sure Joyce touches on it explicitly. It would surprise me more if he didn’t.

Anyway, good luck with your project, man, it’s good knowing there are people out there following their north star.

      2. I must also admit that it bothered me that the Kelmscott-Chaucer went unchallenged for more then 120 years as the most beautiful book ever printed. And Joyce has more than one reason to blush. When I was ploughing through Finnegans Wake for a second time, I became of the opinion that the whole novel is in fact a schizophrenic’s’ autobiography that has been encoded with the help of 64 dictionaries. A brilliant literary hoax.
